As awareness and research around concussions has increased in recent years, Bishop O’Dowd High School has instituted baseline testing with a program called Sway Medical. This tool is used in our contact sports at O’Dowd as a baseline evaluation tool and follow up examination in the event of a possible traumatic brain injury. Select O’Dowd sports teams are baseline tested every year including cheer & dance, football, flag football, rugby, lacrosse, basketball, soccer, water polo, and volleyball.
This concussion management tool is used in combination with other evaluation tools to provide an individualized neuro-cognitive baseline and post-injury assessments. Sway Medical results are read and interpreted by O’Dowd’s sports medicine staff.
Sports Medicine and Academic Support departments have collaborated to create a comprehensive program assisting students under a doctor’s care for head injuries in their “Return to Play” and “Return to Learn”. We feel that these processes go hand-in-hand. O’Dowd athletes will need to complete the RTP protocols outlined by the athletics department before returning to play.
