As awareness and research around concussions has increased in recent years, Bishop O’Dowd High School has instituted baseline testing with a program called Sway Medical. This tool is used in our contact sports at O’Dowd as a baseline evaluation tool and follow up examination in the event of a possible traumatic brain injury. Select O’Dowd sports teams are baseline tested every year including football, rugby, lacrosse, basketball, soccer, and volleyball.
This concussion management tool is used in combination with other evaluation tools to provide an individualized neuro-cognitive baseline and post-injury assessments. Sway Medical results are read and interpreted by O’Dowd’s sports medicine staff.
Sports Medicine and Academic Support departments have collaborated to create a comprehensive program assisting students under a doctor’s care for head injuries in their “Return to Play” and “Return to Learn”. We feel that these processes go hand-in-hand. O’Dowd athletes will need to complete the RTP protocols outlined by the athletics department before returning to play.
